What is the manufacturing process of umbrellas?

Sep 08, 2025|

The process of making an umbrella combines traditional craftsmanship with modern industrial manufacturing. It involves different kinds of precise components, which can be mainly divided into two parts - the canopy and the frame.

I'll introduce the several steps of making an umbrella in detail, focusing on the assembly line in modern factories:

Step 1: Design and Preparation of Raw Materials

Design: First, the style, size, color, and pattern of the umbrella are designed according to market demand.

Raw Materials:

Canopy: Usually made of waterproof or quick-drying materials, such as nylon, polyester, PG cloth (a high-density polyester known for its durability).

Frame: Typically made of steel, fiberglass, aluminum alloy, or carbon fiber. Steel and aluminum are used for shafts and ribs to ensure the strength of umbrella; fiberglass is commonly used for U-shaped joints and tail ribs due to its lightness and elasticity.

Handle: Made of various materials, such as plastic, wood, metal, rubber.

Other Components: caps , tips , buttons (for opening/closing), springs etc.

Step 2: Making the Canopy

Cutting: Pass rolls of umbrella canopy through an automatic cutting machine, and cut according to the designed shape (usually triangular or trapezoidal pieces). A standard umbrella typically consists of 8 panels.

Printing: Based on the design draft, apply printing or embroidery to the pieces.

Sewing: Use an industrial sewing machine to stitch the individual canopy pieces together. It is the crucial step, as specialized waterproof glue must be applied to the edges, to ensure rainwater does not penetrate through the needle holes. After that, a complete umbrella canopy is formed.

Step 3: Making the Frame

Stamping: Metal are sent into a stamping machine to punch out various components of the umbrella frame, rivet holes, and U-shaped slots.

Assembling:

· Connect the shaft, stretcher, and ribs together with small metal fittings (connectors) and rivets, to form a movable truss structure.

· Install springs at the joints to enable umbrella to automatic open and close .

Many umbrella frames (particularly the trailing ribs) are made of fiberglass now. When it is pulled and squeezed in the mold,it is gradually formed. This makes them lightweight, flexible, and resistant to breaking.

Step 4: Assembling the Canopy and frame

1. Install the tips: Thread the tips (small plastic or metal pieces) through the holes on the ends of the ribs. It is to fix the canopy to the frame. It plays a crucial role in connecting.

2. Install the Shaft: Connect the mentioned unit to the shaft (umbrella pole). It is usually a retractable steel tube with two or three sections.

3. Install the Handle and Top Cap: Secure the handle to the bottom of the shaft, and fix the cap (the cover on the top) to the top of the shaft to cover the top ends of the frame.

Step 5: Quality Inspection and Packaging

• Quality Inspection: it is an important link. Each umbrella undergoes an opening and closing test to check if it can work smoothly and if the spring is efficient. And it also undergoes a wind resistance test (simulating a strong wind condition to check the strength of the frame) and a water shower test (checking the waterproof property).

• Packaging: Umbrellas that pass the quality inspection are folded, put into protective bags, and then placed into packaging boxes, waiting for delivery from the factory.

Summary

In short, making a modern umbrella is a highly automated and precise process. The main steps can be divided as follows:

Design → Cutting the Canopy → Sewing the Canopy → Stamping to Make Frame → Assembling Frames → Combining Canopy with Frames → Installing Shaft and Handle → Careful Quality Inspection → Packaging
